Hill Watch: Congress Passes Veterans Bill with Homelessness Provisions

Bill heads to the President's desk for signature 

 

On Friday the U.S. Senate passed, by unanimous consent, H.R. 6416, the “Jeff Miller and Richard Blumenthal Veterans Health Care and Benefits Improvement Act of 2016”. This bill contained several provisions related to veteran homelessness, some of the highlights of which included:

  • Permanently authorizing the use of VA homeless programs by veterans with “Other Than Honorable” discharges,
  • An update to the VA’s definition of homelessness, to include the McKinney-Vento updates which allow individuals fleeing domestic violence to be considered homeless,
  • An authorization of a higher Per Diem rate to be paid to Transition in Place programs,
  • The creation a program to allow for follow-up case management for veterans who have successfully completed a GPD program,
  • Provisions designed to ease the transition for any GPD that wishes shift to units to permanent housing, and
  • Permanently authorizing the National Center for Homelessness Among Veterans.

VA National Cemeteries Now Offering Pre-Need Eligibility Determinations

The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) today announced it now provides eligibility determinations for interment in a VA national cemetery prior to the time of need. Through the Pre-Need Determination of Eligibility Program, upon request, individuals can learn if they are eligible for burial or memorialization in a VA national cemetery.

Wheels for Warriors is in the process of securing the funding for the purchase of NEW 5 – 7 speed bicycles, helmets and gloves for veterans to help them get and keep a job.  If your job is within 20 miles of your home and you do not need to take a Freeway, you CAN ride a bike. 

  • Many roads now have bike trails

  • Bikes do not need insurance

  • Bikes do not need gas

  • Bikes can help reduce cholesterol

  • Bikes can help with weigh loss

  • Bikes can improve your overall health

  • Bikes allow you and opportunity to save $$$$$.

All receipents must go through a qualification process and the award of the bikes is based on a first come first serve basis and dependent on available funding funding.  (Exceptions may arise depending on circulstances)
